The Maltings
The Maltings venue in Berwick will be an ‘iconic, multi-purpose cultural and entertainment complex’. Project managed by Advance Northumberland, the venue is being redeveloped, funded by Government led Borderlands inclusive growth deal and Northumberland County Council.
The project will deliver a reimagined and transformed venue for locals, and a step change in audience numbers and visitor spend across the town. It will be a high profile, high quality, all-weather, all-year destination with a broad appeal, through the day until late in the evening. The new venue will be the anchor institution at the forefront of the town’s culture-led regeneration, supporting new cultural events and festivals across the town in partnership with existing organisations, Create Berwick and the redeveloped Berwick Barracks. It will
also provide new educational resources and new jobs via a range of training and skills development opportunities for local peoplThe facilities will include a larger auditorium with extra seating, a dedicated cinema space, restaurant, bar and a flexible-use education, event, screening and rehearsal space.
During the build, it is proposed The Maltings will use available buildings within Berwick Barracks to continue delivering its programme.
At the Barracks, the “Mob Store” has been transformed temporarily into a single screen cinema with 100+ seats – meaning a new cinema for the town offering screenings throughout the year. Following practical completion of The Maltings, the Mob Store will then become the permanent home of Berwick Archives, accredited by The National Archives.
