First Retailer begins trading at New Retail Park

The coming weeks will see further retailers open their doors for the first time at the newly built Tyneview Retail Park in Prudhoe, Northumberland.

First to start trading was discount retailer B&M which opened for business in mid-November. Supermarket chain Aldi and local business Café Ginerva will follow shortly, opening over the next couple of months.   

Fast food chain McDonalds has also confirmed occupancy, having signed up to a new drive thru unit at the Retail Park, with plans to start trading next Spring.

Construction began at the Low Prudhoe scheme, a joint venture between Advance Northumberland and Northumberland Estates, towards the end of 2019. Despite the Covid pandemic, construction remained on track, allowing retailers to open as planned.     

International real estate advisor Savills, along with Barker Proudlove, represented the developers on the pre-lets and recently brought to market five additional units at the Retail Park ranging from 1,500 sq ft to 20,000 sq ft in size. Talks are already well advanced on the letting of a number of these smaller units, further highlighting the popularity of the development.   

Says Anthony Cape, Asset Manager with Northumberland Estates, “For many years the retail offer in Prudhoe has been limited compared with other comparable towns of a similar size and population in the area. Tyneview will broaden choice for shoppers, as well as helping to attract new trade for the town, while also creating jobs. With new housing plans for the town also moving forwards, the future landscape of the Prudhoe looks very positive.”

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, Chair of Advance Northumberland and cabinet member for economic development at Northumberland County Council said: "It is great to see our joint scheme with Northumberland Estates now opening its doors, it will make a huge difference to the town of Prudhoe. Developments like this will be vital in propelling our economy out of the Covid-19 crisis and we continue to plan and work on projects across our county, to ensure Northumberland's economy recovers rapidly.”

The store manager at B&M, Rob Leask, said: “The new store has been really busy since we opened earlier this month and feedback from the customers has been great.”

“Customers can expect to find an extensive range of branded products including toys, food & drink, pet range, health & beauty and homeware, as well as hundreds of plant varieties and gardening essentials in the garden centre.”

Gordon Stewart County Cllr for Prudhoe South & deputy business chair on Northumberland County Council said. “'The B&M store has been warmly welcomed by many people, I am delighted to hear that local residents have secured employment there, and that there has been an increase in the number of shoppers in the town which will hopefully have been of assistance to other businesses'”.
